Choosing the Right Mechanic

posted by Auto Protection Specialist

After popularity of the Confessions of an Auto Shop Mechanic, we wanted to expand on the topic and compile a how-to list for choosing the right mechanic. Here it goes.

Choosing the right mechanic a bit like choosing the right doctor. You want him to learn your [auto] history and not ask stupid questions over and over again. In addition, you want to develop a relationship with the mechanic so that you feel comfortbale that he is not going to charge an arm and a leg next time you need repairs. Below are some tips.

How to choose the RIGHT mechanic

1. Proximity to your home matters – If you need to change oil or do some other repairs, the last thing you want is to wait while the work takes place. If you have a mechanic near your house, you can always ask for a drive home and/or a pick up from a friend.

2. Look beyond the initial quote – If the initial repair quote seems a bit high, be sure to ask why. Don’t shoot down a good mechanic just because he gave you a quote a couple of bucks higher. Ask him to explain why he charges higher than guys nearby.

3. Large franchises are not necessarily more expensive – You should not assume that doing repairs at larger shops such as Midas or Pep Boys is more expensive than your local Moms and Pops repair shop. Give a call to a few places and get accurate quotes.

4. Solicit referrals – Friends don’t let friends choose bad mechanics. Ask for recommendations.

5. Make sure you’re happy with the job – If the mechanic does not spend enough time with your car, be sure to point out flaws in the job. If you get attitude - run!

And, as always, remember that a lot of extended service plans have a benefit that allow you to choose your own repair shop in the event of a breakdown. Want more info? Get a free quote today!
